Creating inbound traction for an early-stage edtech startup

Google Ads had shown promise but was unpredictable. Fixing the tracking, learning what makes parents act and getting found in AI search turned it into a steady flow of consultation bookings.

About Learning DNA

Learning DNA is the UK's first multidisciplinary neurodiversity clinic. Based in Solihull and working online, it provides assessments, therapies and support for children with autism, ADHD, dyslexia and other learning differences.

It also offers SEND software used by more than 300 schools. The first step for the parents they support is a free consultation call with their team.

The challenge

Turning promising ads into predictable traction

As an early-stage startup, Learning DNA needed traction: a steady, predictable flow of parents booking consultations and entering the top of their funnel.

Set up in-house, Google Ads had shown some promise, but performance was unpredictable and opaque. It wasn't clear which spend was producing quality leads, and without that there was no clear case for investing more or obvious direction to grow.

My strategy
1
Make every enquiry measurable
2
Learn what makes parents act
3
Get found where parents ask questions
How I helped

From unpredictable ads to a steady flow of inbound leads

Three ways I helped Learning DNA build inbound traction

1
Paid search

Profitable and scalable Google Ads

I started by restructuring the campaign around high-intent keywords aligned with Learning DNA's commercial priorities, and fixed leaky conversion tracking across Google Ads and GA4.

Phone calls were a key enquiry route but a reporting black hole. We implemented CallRail to track every call and measure call quality against web form enquiries. When Learning DNA introduced a CRM with online calendar booking, we switched the campaign to optimise around direct meeting bookings, pulling ad spend closer to commercial value.

Ad spend scaled by 300%, with ROI visible through the funnel.
2
Customer insight

Capturing real customer insights

Jobs To Be Done interviews with early customers identified the moments parents decided to seek help, what they'd already tried, and what led them to take action: the trigger events, the steps they take next and the language they use. The findings were used in three ways:

Writing customer stories, the middle-funnel content that was previously missing
Refining ad copy using parents' own language
Creating SEO and AEO content around the questions parents ask
Consideration-stage content and a clear picture of what prompts parents to act.
3
AI search

Surfacing on Google and in AI search

Parents usually start with a question, not a search for a clinic. A growing share of those questions are answered by Google's AI Overviews and tools like ChatGPT.

Using the interview findings, I created long-form content answering the specific problems parents were researching. Each piece was written for parents and structured so search engines and AI tools can understand and cite it.

How do I know which Google Ads spend is producing quality leads?

You need conversion tracking that follows each enquiry from the ad to the outcome. I start by fixing tracking across Google Ads and GA4, including phone calls, and where possible connect it to your CRM so booked meetings are measured as well as form fills. That gives you a cost per lead and stage-by-stage conversion rates, so you can see which spend is worth increasing.

Should I optimise Google Ads for form fills, calls or booked meetings?

Optimise for the action closest to revenue that you can track reliably. If you take bookings through a CRM with an online calendar, booked meetings are usually the best signal because they show real intent. Until then, track both calls and forms, compare their quality, and let Google Ads optimise towards the enquiries that turn into customers.

What are Jobs To Be Done interviews and how do they help marketing?

They are short, structured conversations with recent customers about the moment they decided to look for help, what they had already tried and what made them choose you. The interviews show the events that trigger a purchase and the words customers use to describe their problem. I use those findings to write customer stories, sharpen ad copy and plan content that answers the questions people are asking.

How can I get my business mentioned in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT?

Create content that answers the specific questions your customers research, in the language they use. Each piece should give a clear, direct answer near the top, with a logical heading structure so search engines and AI tools can understand and cite it. Content built from real customer interviews tends to match those questions closely, which is what AI answers draw on.

How can an early-stage startup build a steady flow of inbound leads?

Start with high-intent search, where people are already looking for what you offer, and make every enquiry measurable from day one. Once that channel is profitable, add content for the earlier stages, when people are still researching their problem. That combination brings in leads now and builds visibility in Google and AI search for later.
